By 1950 the United States dominated the worldwide economy. World War II was the upward turning point for the American economy, and with economic strength came political power worldwide. The political leadership dynamic that developed then continues to this day.
The two-party democratic-republican system dominates American politics. With that dominance, polices and decisions made in Washington affects the world.
Historically, American policy has not been shy of outright intervention. From the time President Theodore Roosevelt forced the Panamanian revolution and friendly terms to build the canal, to the War on Terror with its multiple military actions, American political decisions have a direct impact.I was looking for more information and found it here.
Indirectly, the largess of the American national economy created a new international order. Political moves to create “free trade” allowed American corporations to dominate worldwide economies. 20th century American corporations exploited natural resources, built infrastructure, and imported raw materials setting the stage for the first multinational corporate structures.
Only in the recent decade has American world political power seen decline. With the growing strength of the Chinese and Indian economies, a general improvement in other national economies, and the consequent increasing political strength outside of America, a new sharing of political power is well on its way.
